Artist's statement: My paintings are based on my explorations of London at night. The City offers a seemingly infinite supply of brooding and atmospheric scenes to depict. I have endeavoured to relate the sense of apprehension and ambiguity one experiences when walking down a lamplit London street. Many of the streets depicted are familiar to me, and will also be familiar to many people who see these works, yet the subtle changes that night brings can render them unrecognisable. The viewer is invited to explore the scene and speculate about the cast of anonymous characters, who leave their mark on the mood of the painting.
